Bo Kaap Cooking Tour, Cape Town

The Malay people of South Africa are descendents of the slaves and exiled dissidents who were brought to South Africa from the Dutch East Indies by the Dutch in the 17th and 18th centuries. Bobotie is a favourite spicy Cape recipe that has its roots in the traditional cooking of the Cape Malay people.

A cooking class that incorporates the history and nuances of a nation is probably the best way to immerse yourself into a country’s culture. The Bo Kaap Cooking Tour is a form of interactive tourism where you meet a local master chef and learn from her through food. The Tour starts as a guided walking tour outside the Bo-Kaap Museum. It travels through the masala route to a spice shop, the historic cobbled streets of Bokaap and ends at Aunty Zanie’s home for a hands on cooking experience.

During the cooking lessons you learn about Cape Malay cooking which is widely believed to be the strongest influence in South African cuisine. Cape Malay cooking is fragrantly flavored with spices such as Cilantro, Coriander, Curry Leaves, Garlic and Ginger. You won’t leave empty handed. After completing the class and enjoying the meal you return home with a recipe booklet and a selection of the spices used. Just enough to get you started on your own Cape Malay Curry once back in your own kitchen!
