Think of the carnival in Rio and New Orleans and you will have a pretty good idea of the carnival held in Cape Town annually. It is a splash of vibrant color, rhythmic music, incredible costumes and a whole lot of fun.

It is a time when South Africans can showcase their creativity and unite through art, dance and music. If you are in Cape Town during Carnival then it is most definitely an event to add to the itinerary.

Cape Town Jazz Festival


Where: Cape Town
When: Last weekend in March

The Cape Town Jazz Festival runs for two days and in 2013 celebrated its 14th year. It draws crowds upwards of 34,000 visitors annually and is considered an international event in Jazz communities. Recently it was placed 4th most popular jazz festival in the world and topped favorites such as Switzerland's Montreaux Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland.

The Cape Town International Jazz Festival is held over two nights, with over 40 International and South African artists performing.

During the 2 day event, the 40+ local and international musicians perform on 5 different stages.  For families there are a number of events designed exclusively for children. The festival also caters to a variety of interests and have exhibitions set out such as a photographic exhibition and more.

Franschhoek Oesfees (Harvest Festival)


Where: Franschhoek, Cape Winelands
When: Mid to late March

The harvest festival marks the end of the harvest season. It is a time when the harvest workers can come out and celebrate all their hard work with music, and of course a little, ok a lot of, dancing.

The food offerings are excellent and feature many of South Africa’s signature traditional dishes such as bobotie, snoek and patats, waterblommetjie bredie and sweets like koeksisters and askoek. Many of South Africa’s top artists join the cast of this incredible local production.

More than 100 uniquely South African performers and over 5000 Cape music enthusiasts came together for traditional Boland rural music and local Cape cuisine.

The annual Oesfees event takes place at the Solms-Delta wine estate, bringing farm workers and farm owners together to celebrate their hard work and the Cape's rich cultural heritage.

Thousands visit the festival annually and it sells out very quickly. In the spirit of celebration, over 1000 complementary tickets were given out to the farm workers so that they could enjoy the festivities as well.

Feast of the Grape Festival


Where: Durbanville, Cape Winelands
When: First week in March

As wine festivals go, Durbanville’s Feast of the Grape is a plethora of vineyard adventures and taste sensations. It marks the end of the grape harvest season.

Guests can enjoy a celebration that includes food, wine and good music, as well as adventures in the vineyards that include picking bunches of grapes, making your own wine, cellar tours and wine tasting.

Lambert’s Bay Kreeffees (Crayfish Festival)


Where: Lambert's Bay, West Coast
When: 3rd weekend in March

The Kreeffees (Crayfish Festival) is held towards the end of March in the west coast town of Lambert’s Bay. It is a time when the town comes to life with music performed by South African musicians.

Adventure activities include bungee jumping, aerial displays and sporting competitions, including a crayfish fishing competition.

The most important focus is of course on the crayfish. Festival goers can feast on the delicacy to their heart’s content, at a variety of food stalls around the festival and at the beer garden.

Children are not forgotten and activities are available to keep even the smallest festival visitor happy.
