The whole valley is involved in this weekend event with all the events taking place at the various wineries and cellars. It is growing annually and reported a visitor count of 10,000 in the past few years.

Depending on which winery is being visited guests can enjoy food, wine, live music and outdoor activities such as quad biking, helicopter flips, clay pigeon shooting, archery and paintball.

Competitive sporting events are well represented and include the Breedekloof Outdoor Challenge, a night run through the vineyards and a mountain bike fun ride. Each of these events is hosted by a different wine estate.

For families with children this is the perfect festival to attend as it offers pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting and a sheep dog demonstration at Botha Wine Cellar.

In a bid to educate the public on the plight of the penguin, sea birds and other wild and wonderful creatures, SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) holds an annual free event in Simons Town. It is typically held on a Saturday at Seaforth Beach in front of Boulders Beach Lodge and Restaurant on Bellevue Rd. The focus is on releasing rehabilitated African penguins back into the wild.

Other attractions on the day include a snake and reptile show, raptor show, live spider exhibition and refreshments stalls. Children all ages can have their picture taken with a penguin as part of a fund raiser for SANCCOB.

This is how a group of wonderful people make an incredible organisation that cares for our sea birds.

The African Penguin was classified as an endangered species in 2010. It is found in nature in the oceans of Southern Africa and nowhere else.

If the weather behaves, visitors can go on to the beach at Boulders and swim with the penguins. Please remember these are wild animals and will bite if they feel threatened.

Booking essential: No
