Cape Town Beach Guide| Noordhoek | SOUTH ATLANTIC

Travel southwards from Hout Bay along Chapman’s Peak Drive. As you descend into Noordhoek Valley on the southern side of this spectacular coastal drive, a beach comes into view that seems almost to stretch to the horizon. This is Noordhek beach, an 8km (5 mile) long stretch of sand extending south to Kommetjie Lighthouse at the far end.

Noordhoek beach is an immense, flat expanse of sand with shallow ponds forming some distance from the surf line, fed by waves at high tide and during storms. Directly inland of the beach are National Park wetlands, rising up to mountain slopes covered in green coastal fynbos.

Noordhoek Beach, Cape Peninsula

Noordhoek's beach stretches south from the base of Chapman's Peak. This too is the location of “The Hoek”, a well-known surfing beach. Here, apart from the surfers, there are occasional sightings of dolphins gambling in the surf.

The lower slopes of Chapman’s Peak are covered with dark-green trees, the white milkwoods of Noordhoek.

Horse Riding
Stables close to the beach provide organized horse riding trails - both beach and bush trails. Trails (typically 2 hours duration) go out several times a day, led by an experienced and knowledgeable guide.

Beach Walk to the shipwreck of the Kakapo
Take a 40 minute walk along the beach from the parking lot to where the remains of the wreck of the Kakapo (boiler, hull ribs and rudder) protrude from the sand. The wreck can be seen in the distance against the white sand, from Chapmans Peak Drive. This walk follows a part of the Hoerikwaggo Trail from Cape Town’s Table Mountain to Cape Point.

The Kakapo was a 665 ton schooner-rigged steamship, en route from Cape Town to Australia. On 25th May 1900 the ship sailed south in severe weather to navigate around Cape Point. With poor visibility, a North Westerly gale, driving rain and huge seas, the officer-of-the-watch mistook Chapmans Peak for Cape point. His order of ‘hard to port, full steam ahead’ resulted in the beaching of the steamship on Noordhoek beach! All on board were resued, but attempts to pull the ship off the sand were unsuccessful.

Where few other people share the beach, especially along the remote stretches of this long beach, tourists and hikers are at risk of robbery. Attacks at knifepoint have been taking place at almost any time of the day. Visitors to the beach are advised by local authorities to walk in groups of 4 or more adults and not to carry valuables.

With its tranquil rural farm setting and relaxed family lifestyle, Noordhoek has even more to offer the visitor. Explore Noordhoek Farm Village and the Red Herring Trading Center for hotel accommodation, a bakery, deli, restaurants, a country pub and kid-friendly shopping.
